RideOn braved the winter cold and rains and went on another old favorite East Bay route. Starting at Dublin/Pleasanton BART, we headed south to the Sunol Wilderness and Calaveras Dam — also recently opened like Crystal Springs. Then we biked west to return via Warm Springs BART. The ride started well with the sun and blue sky breaking through the grey clouds. We thought we’d get away with just a few light showers but when we were above the dam, most of us were pelted by a hail storm. With snow capped Mt Hamilton as a backdrop! Luckily, delicious tea and thalis warmed us up at the Chaat House.

RideOn Goes to Crystal Springs Dam

After 8 years, Crystal Springs Dam is finally open! On a gorgeous winter day, we headed south from Arizmendi Bakery in the Mission to the Crystal Springs bike/rec paths. Beautiful ride, pretty busy on a Sunday. Admired a red-tailed hawk that was hanging out next to the path. After relaxing in the sun, we cruised across the shiny, new dam – now much taller to increase reservoir capacity. There’s a new bike path on the other side that looks like it connects almost to 92. We turned around and headed back up the path and over to Millbrae BART to end the ride. Next time we’ll have to continue to CaƱada Road and Robert’s Market in Woodside.
